Generation No. 1

1. JOSEPH1 SHULFER was born 1813, and died 10 Aug 1883 in St. Casmir's Cemetery. He married MARIANNA DERRA 06 Feb 1837 in Klukowa Huta, West Prussia. She was born 1813.

Notes for JOSEPH SHULFER:

THE FAMILY HISTORY OF JOSEPH AND MARIANNA (DERRA) SHULFER

Joseph Shulfer and Marianna Derra were married at Klukowa Huta, West Prussia, on February 6, 1837. (LDS film no. 072, 746 marriages) The witnesses at their marriage were Michael Matyka and Johann Patoka. Having both male witnesses is still traditional in Europe today.

Joseph and Marianna, were both age 23 at the time of their marriage.

I had received this from my cousin Marcy( Marcella Shulfer, who parents are Alois and Ester Shulfer)Trzinski after the death of my mother Virgina (Shulfer) Disher., she was very successful in tracking down the family members through the Genealogical Society from the Mormom Church of Salt Lake City, that have gathered world-wide parish records, and have put them on microfilm, Film no. 544,864 Stendsitz, West Prussia, had the births of ten children of Joseph and Marianna Shulfer, seven of them to have come to America, and have as many descendants in the state of Wisconsin - especially Portage County.

Joseph Shulfer, born 1813, supposedly came to the United States and landed at the port of Baltimore in August of 1860, according to his paper of intention of wanting to become a U.S. citizen, signed at the Portage County courthouse in Nov. of 1861. Immigrants coming to Baltimore primary were those who were making their destination in the midwest. Many railroad tracks went directly to the docks, so that the emigrants could load onto the rail cars at this point. From here rode to Pittsburgh , at this time . and those with sufficient funds were able to continue westward by rail to Chicago or Milwaukee -wagon and ox was the general mode of transportation on land at this time, between shorter destinations.

A genealogist search the Baltimore passenger list, as well as the Library of Congress passenger lists from 1858-1863, and this Shulfer family line could not be found--although passenger lists were not always complete so, it is not known if the family came over at the same time, but it is more probable they did not. quite often the father or an older son came over a year or so before the rest of the family to get established before they would send for the rest of the family .

The youngest child in the family, Theophill Simon, was born December 10, 1860, so that gives reason to think the father may have gone ahead of the rest of the family, being arrived in Baltimore in August of August of 1860. Older sons, John and Joseph gave the year of 1861 as coming to the U. S. and arriving at Baltimore. The story has been passed down that a male child died on the ship coming to America. Theophil Simon had to have been the male child. Many passengers were often stricken with cholera, and other diseases and illnesses that were fatal; their bodies then wrapped in canvas and dropped into the ocean. It has been said to mother , Marianna, also died on the ship or else in Milwaukee, en route to Portage County. There has been no record of her being in Portage county.

Joseph Shulfer (spelled Sulfher) first appeared on June 22, 1870 Town of Sharon census, Ellis Post Office, a farmer age 58 given, from Prussia , listed with a son, Michael age 16, who is a farmer laborer, and a son Thomas, age 12, at school. The worth of his real estate was $500, $350 personal estate, and a few animals listed; which was quite the norm for the period of time. His son, Joseph, (spelled Shulfer) age 26, was also listed in the 1870 town of Sharon census, as a farmer, with $200 value of real estate, and $100 his personal estate. Frank Lukasveitz, age 24 listed living at the same household and a farm laborer, Another son,John, age 30 was listed in the town of Hull census, with his wife, Maria, and 3 children: Anna 4, Nettie 3, and Frank 6 mths. In the 1880 census, Town of Stockton, Joseph Shulfer, age 67, a widower, is listed as making his home with son, John and family. Joseph Shulfer died august 10, 1883. and was buried at St. Casimir's Cemetery on the 12th of August - Church records there give his age as 75 - more likely his actual age was 70.

( The name Shulfer has had various spelling - Szulfer, Schulfer, Silpher, Sulfher, Shilpher, Sulfert - especially on earlier records.
