TROUTING BY HAND IN DRAINAGE DITCH RESULTS IN
FINES
As the result of investigations by S. E.
Browning, a deputy sheriff, and Harry E. Brooks, secretary of the Izaak
Walton league, two men were fined in county court this morning on charges of
taking trout during the closed season.
The two were Bernard Shomberg and John
Disher, both residents near the drainage district, who were taken into
custody on Sunday afternoon at the head waters of the Isherwood ditch in
Buena Vista and brought to county jail.
Pleading guilty to charges of capturing and
killing trout during the closed season, each were fined $75 and taxed costs
of $5.95. In default of payment, three months' terms in the county jail must
be served. Disher was given 10 days in which to pay and Shomberg was allowed
a few days time in which to attempt to secure the money.
Twenty-three trout, some of them a good size,
14 inches in length were confiscated by Browning. The officer reported that
when he and Brooks came upon Disher and Shomberg, one was pounding the water
with a long pole to frighten the fish into shallow water and the other was
scooping the trout out with his hands. As trout are in headwaters of the
ditches now, spawning, the fish are sluggish.
