Obituary

George Bernard Shopinski

George Bernard Shopinski, 80, of 2820 Gilman Drive, Plover, died Wednesday, May 14, 2003, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Bronislava Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Bronislava Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Jensen Funeral Home. There will be a flag presentation by the Plover American Legion Post 0543 at the cemetery.

He was born April 16, 1923, in Plover, to the late Frank and Francis (Singer) Shopinski.

George was married to Irene E. Norton on Nov. 26, 1948, at St. Stephen Catholic Church. She died in 2002.

He retired from Nekoosa-Port Edwards Paper Mills in 1981 where he worked as a supervisor. He began as a tow motor operator in 1948. He did farm work and other jobs until entering the U.S. Army during World War II. He was stationed in the Pacific Theater on various islands. He served as a medic and an ambulance driver.

George spent his retirement years doing some fishing with his friends. He mostly enjoyed talking to his many neighbors and friends as they stopped in to share the latest news and a cold beverage. He loved a good card game and would often frequent the Plover ball park to watch the youth ball games. He was a true blue Packer fan and often talked to the televised game and Vince Lombardi as to how to coach HIS team. He was a Brewer fan, but was a Brave fan first. He loved a good argument about anything. He enjoyed listening to his nephew Tom crank out the Polkas every Sunday on the radio. Old time music was the only music according to George.

He was a member of St. Bronislava Catholic  Church. He was a member of the Plover American Legion Post 0543.

Survivors include his children, Randy (Sherry) Shopinski, Stevens Point, and Mark (Mickey) Shopinski, Wausau; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; one brother, Leo (Irene) Shopinski, Stevens Point; four sisters, Evelyn Fabisak, Waukesha, Delores Matke, Stevens Point, Jeannie (Gene) Smrz, Plover, and Betty (Ernest), Stevens Point. He was preceded in death by his wife; one daughter; one brother, David; and his parents.

Obituary

Irene E. Shopinski

Irene E. Shopinski, 74, 2820 Gilman Drive, Plover, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at River Pines Center.

The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Bronislava Catholic Church, Plover, with the Rev. James Trempe officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Jensen and Jinsky Funeral Home, Plover, where a rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m., and again from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Irene was born April 3, 1928, in Plover, a daughter of Francis (Beaulieu) Norton, Whiting, and the late Oliver Norton. She graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School in 1945.

Irene was married to George Shopinski on Nov. 27, 1948, at St. Stephens Catholic Church. He survives at home.

Irene retired in 1986 from Piggly Wiggly in Plover. She enjoyed gardening, reading, country music, Playing bingo, talking to her many acquaintances, playing cards with her family and her many pets. She was a member of St. Bronislava Catholic Church.

Survivors also include two sons, Randy (Sherry), Stevens Point, and Mark (Mickey), Wausau; one brother, Irvine Norton, King; one sister, Ruth Smith, Bird Creek, Alaska; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father and a daughter.
